Bringing the Past to Life: The Art of Gustave Dore

Stories aren’t the only piece of the past coming to life with Rosanne E. Lortz’s new historical fiction trilogy The Chronicles of Tancred. The cover art for the new series is from an older era as well. In collaboration with designer Masha Shubin, Lortz has chosen three of Gustave Dore’s 18th century engravings to grace the covers of the three books. Depicting dramatic scenes in the history of the Crusades, Dore’s black and white artwork is currently in the public domain, although the finished cover images–now that Shubin has worked her colorization magic–are now copyrighted.
